Hisar School Pen Academy

“The Pen Academy views writing not merely as a skill, but as the language of thinking, inquiry, and meaning-making.”

The Pen Academy is a writing unit designed to develop students’ higher-order cognitive skills, including critical thinking, critical writing, inquiry, and metacognitive thinking. The Academy approaches reading, writing, and discussion as an integrated process, strengthening students’ abilities to ground their ideas, construct arguments, and express meaning in a structured and coherent way.

While the Pen Academy is grounded in the learning outcomes of the Turkish Language and Literature curriculum, it is not a unit focused solely on writing. Rather, it approaches writing as a mode of thinking, questioning, and meaning-making. Through this perspective, it supports students’ growth in both academic and creative writing, inviting them into an intellectual environment where thinking, writing, and discussion intersect.

Purpose:

To enable students to experience writing as a means of thinking, questioning, and meaning-making, and to support their development as individuals who think critically, cultivate creative forms of expression, and share their ideas within a culture of dialogue and discussion.

Objectives:
  • To develop students’ written expression skills.

  • To provide guidance in writing skills aligned with the curriculum.

  • To offer individual support to students in academic and creative writing.

  • To encourage the production of student-centered publications and continue using these publications as instructional materials.

Scope of Activities

Academic Writing Support

Students are guided in writing research papers, essays, analyses, and critical texts, with this support integrated into the assessment and evaluation processes of the Turkish Language and Literature courses.

Contribution to publication processes

The Academy enables students to have their writing reviewed and featured in school publications and contributes to the overall quality of the publications’ content.

National and International Participation

The Academy prepares students for writing competitions, conferences, and symposiums, supporting their representation in national and international academic settings.

Interdisciplinary contribution

The Pen Academy collaborates with teachers from different disciplines to support students’ multifaceted thinking and expressive skills.

Creative Writing Workshops

Workshops are organized on short stories, poetry, essays, and fictional texts. Students develop original forms of expression and discover their own literary voices.

Advising and Structure

At the Pen Academy, the advisor who supports students’ academic development works in close collaboration with the 9th grade subject teachers to guide the process. In addition, four student mentors serve as facilitators within the Academy. Peer learning at the Pen Academy is built on a reciprocal and interactive model.

While academic mentors guide their peers, they further develop their own intellectual depth, expressive skills, and academic awareness. At the same time, students receiving mentorship gain not only writing skills but also a strong culture of thinking, discussion, and constructive feedback. In this way, learning becomes a dynamic process in which both sides learn from one another, share ideas, and progress together.

Contribution to School Culture

The Pen Academy strengthens the culture of writing and thinking not only through workshops and publications, but also through initiatives that support the written communication and critical thinking skills of the entire school community. Within this scope, the Academy develops various guidance materials that facilitate academic expression, thinking, and communication processes for both students and teachers.

Beyond supporting individual production, the Academy functions as a resource center that nurtures high-quality written communication and thinking skills across the school as a whole.
