Thematic Learning Approach at Hisar School

At Hisar School, a year-long theme is determined for each academic year with the aim of deepening students’ learning experiences, building a shared learning culture across the school, and offering a coherent developmental journey from PreK–12. These themes are not merely annual focus areas; they are dynamic learning anchors that continuously evolve and strengthen over the years as part of our school culture. Their continuity and cumulative progression are monitored in subsequent years, and their effectiveness and impact are regularly evaluated.

Each theme is structured in alignment with contemporary educational approaches, our school vision, and the developmental needs of our students. They also serve as an educational framework that translates our strategic plans, policies, and goals into practice, while reflecting the core values of our school. The primary aim is to support students in building meaningful connections with the world, engaging in interdisciplinary thinking, and actively participating in their learning processes.

This approach serves the following purposes within our PreK–12 learning community:

Pedagogical Foundations of Thematic Learning

In today’s world—where knowledge is rapidly produced and technology continually reshapes learning processes—the fundamental role of education is to develop students’ ability to critically evaluate information, contextualize it, and use it with ethical responsibility. This approach positions thematic learning as an institutional strategy for learning and thinking.

Annual academic themes provide a sustained learning framework that strengthens students’ habits of thinking, ways of questioning, and approaches to learning, while nurturing their intellectual curiosity and cognitive responsibility. To achieve this, relevant themes are made more visible and meaningful within lesson plans, learning outcomes, and assessment systems.

The aim is to enable students, over the course of an academic year, to think deeply around a single core concept, examine it from multiple disciplinary perspectives, and transform abstract ideas into meaningful learning experiences.

Selection of Themes

The theme for each academic year is determined through a holistic evaluation that takes into account global social and scientific developments, pedagogical research on child and adolescent development, international educational approaches and best practices, as well as the mission, vision, and core principles of Hisar School. The selected themes are grounded in long-term trends, universal concepts independent of time and place, and structures that encourage interdisciplinary thinking. In this way, the same theme can be developmentally adapted and explored at varying levels of cognitive depth from Preschool through High School.

How Are Annual Academic Themes Implemented?

At Hisar School, annual academic themes are implemented through a planned, multi-layered process that functions both as a conceptual framework and as a practice shaped by the active participation of all stakeholders. This process is structured around a continuous cycle of learning, application, and reflection throughout the academic year.

Professional Learning and Academic Work for Staff and Teachers: At the beginning of the academic year, the annual theme is addressed through professional learning activities, workshops, and interdisciplinary planning meetings organized by PÖMER (Professional Learning Center). Within the scope of vertical alignment, these activities support teachers in integrating the theme into their curriculum content and learning objectives, aligning assessment criteria and rubrics with the theme, and developing a shared instructional language in classroom practices.

Interdisciplinary Learning Experiences for Students: The selected theme is explored through an interdisciplinary lens within students’ learning processes. It is transformed into coherent and meaningful learning experiences through classroom practices, project-based learning, and inquiry- and research-oriented activities. Students’ thinking skills and developmental progress related to the theme are monitored throughout the year through structured observation and assessment processes.

Learning Partnerships with Parents and Stakeholders: The annual academic theme is shared with all components of the school community and made visible across various platforms throughout the year. Ongoing communication with parents and other stakeholders supports the development of a shared understanding of the theme. Seminars, talks, written and visual informational materials, and regular communication initiatives are utilized to this end. The aim is to help parents view annual themes as a holistic pedagogical framework that strengthens the school’s learning approach and enables them to contribute meaningfully to their children’s learning journey.

Visual and Cultural Reflections Within the School: The theme is also made visible within the school’s physical and cultural environment. Through visual designs, shared language and concept sets, and theme-referenced activities, students are supported in engaging with the same core concept throughout the year.

Continuous Review and Reflection: Throughout the academic year, theme implementation is reviewed by the Executive Board, school leadership, and teachers. These evaluations inform the planning of the following academic year and contribute to the sustainability and ongoing development of the annual thematic learning approach as a dynamic and evolving structure.

Our PreK–12 Thematic Learning Framework and Its Ongoing Impact

Although the annual themes listed below were the focus of specific academic years, their influence and applications have continued in subsequent years, evolving into a long-term, school-wide learning culture. This approach aims to ensure that our students experience meaningful, connected, and lasting learning not only within a single academic year but throughout their entire educational journey, while also contributing to the continuous development of our school culture.
